Kinja'd!!!

We got like 5" of snow here in Madison on Sunday afternoon/night, and another dusting last night. It got down to -7 F last night. I only have one garage space in my building, so my 135is stays inside and my Grand Cherokee gets parked in the lot. This morning I went outside to my Grand Cherokee to head to work. The damn key wouldn't turn in the ignition!

I had some Lock De-Icer spray which I tried to no avail. I got a can of Liquid Wrench and sprayed that crap in there too. Nothing.

Coincidentally, I had already scheduled an appointment to bring it into the Jeep dealer tomorrow morning, so I called them to add the ignition lock to the list of things to check out. They suggested banging on it with something heavy while trying to turn the key, so I grabbed a socket from my lug wrench kit in the car and whacked the key with it but no luck.

So...I took the 135is to work today. On summer tires. I made it, because the city of Madison is good at clearing the roads. But I got a bunch of salt, sand & muck all over it that I would've rather avoided.

If I can't get the key on the Jeep to turn, I'm going to have it towed to the dealer, since I get free towing from my insurance.

Ah yes, such lovely build quality. Hope it doesn't snow tomorrow...

It's a jeep thing, you wouldn't understand.

Don't feel bad, my locks freeze at the mere suggestion of cold.

This used to happen to me with my Grand Cherokee. Go to your local hardware store and pick up a small bottle/container/what have you of graphite powder. Squeeze some of this onto a paper towel and run your key through it a few times. The key will slide right into the ignition and work every time. I've had my Grand Cherokee for about 6 years now and it's become a habit for me to put graphite on the key. Give it a try and let me know if it works!

Well, I got the graphite powder, and it still didn't help. I also got out my rubber mallet and tried hitting the key with it while the key is in the ignition, since that was another fix mentioned online. That didn't work either.

So...I called a 24 hour locksmith who is on the way over to my place.

Ah, damn I thought that would do the trick. Sorry I couldn't help you out! Both of those things used to work on my GC. Unfortunately it sounds like a bigger problem in your car. Hopefully you can getting it working again soon!

Well hey, I still appreciate the suggestion.

This weekend the ignition lock was being kinda sticky, but I think the temp dropping so low last night is what killed it.

If this locksmith can't get it sorted, then I'll schedule a tow for the morning. Which, while inconvenient, is also free (in that I pay for it through my insurance anyway).

Luckily since I have 2 cars and we're not supposed to get any snow for the next few days, I can still get around. It's not the end of the world if my BMW gets a little road salt on it, I can always get it washed.
